Chinese law has gone through massive changes throughout its two thousand year history Within this timeframe there are many different political periods that influenced Chinese society and its laws from its long and vast dynasty period dating back thousands of years to where it is now an emerging civilization on the cusp of becoming a global powerhouse It is difficult to understand and compare Chinese law with the ideas of the West without first understanding Chinese history because of the significant differences between our cultures and how our societies evolved Due to Chinas extensive past this section concentrates on Chinese law post-1949 the beginning of the Chinese Communist Partys control but focuses on modern China and its evolving laws and regulations in todays world During the pre-reform era 1949-1978 the Chinese Communist Party held tight control and watch over the people One of the many ways they maintained this control was through the implementation of household registration systems which was mainly enacted in rural parts of the country Liang 18 These household registration systems required individuals to register at local security departments and were subsequently obligated to hold a booklet which contained private information about them such as their name date of birth and place of birth The CCP also created political classifications where many people were either held above or below the law They also generated workplace controls over its workers especially in urban areas where they could control your political performance after-work life and your private life All of these methods used by the CCP created a legal system in which the law was used as a tool of the Chinese government to create class struggles in order to push forward the development of society Throughout the pre-reform era many examples can be drawn from this conclusion including the Anti-Rightists campaign the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution Mao would manufacture
