Roots of Black America MrKellogg Question 3 The Reconstruction period after the war failed in many ways to change the Souths social structure as still almost all African Americans were very poor and though they were considered free were really not There were many different classes or groups that everyone belonged to after the war I state the different sides of reconstruction after the war Stephan Holms was a former slave owner who desperately wanted to have the old way of life return He spread a lot of racist propaganda like the KKK which angered people He tried to get whites to hate the blacks by creating hatred in their hearts For example he made people like Jason Hugar with all the propaganda He was very upset because his and many other planters only way of life was taken away from them and they wanted it back He also disapproved of the war because that too contributed to the loss of a way of life At first he seemed like he wasnt that bad of a person A good example of why I say this is because he invites Gideon over for dinner at his place At first nobody knows why but we learn during and after that he invited him theyre to prove a point That not all blacks were ignorant and had a great amount of potential We learn that he is like all the other planters and wants the old days of slavery to return so he can prosper His plan for the south was to bring back slavery and to bring the KKK into the picture and reform the whole south after the troops leave 180-181 He held all the planters ideas of how reconstruction should return back to the past so they get their power back and get rich Abner Lait was a poor white who hated black men and plantation owners He was brought up with these
