Antigone Divine Law vs Human Law Sophocles Antigone is probably one of the best examples of a tragic drama The two main characters of the play are Antigone and Creon There is a lot conflict between Antigone and Creon throughout the play Both of them having their own ideas and opinions regarding divine law versus human law The theme that I am going to discuss is the conflict of divine law vs human law The reason for this is because this seems to be the theme of the whole play It is an issue of which law is the right law and if Creons and Antigones acts were justifiable Both Antigone and Creon have their own ideas of what is right and what is wrong Antigone believed that the actions she took were done for the right reason because they follow the law of the Gods In opposition Creon believed that the actions he had taken were in fact the right ones because he believed that Polyneices was a traitor to the land and that anyone who should give him a proper burial would suffer the penalty of death So the actions that were taken by each of the individuals were right in their own minds Antigone in her plan to give her brother Polyneices a proper burial kept in mind the consequences that she would endure for having followed through with the plan This doesnt necessarily mean that Antigone does not obey the human law that is given by King Creon it just means that this particular rule conflicted with the law of the Gods something that Antigone believes highly in obeying especially when it deals with her family Antigone disregards the law that governs the land and follows the laws that make civilized life possible Antigone presents her side when she proclaims Isnt a mans right to burial decreed by divine justice I dont consider your
