Hurt 20 is an updated version of Hurt by Chap Clark in it he adds moredata and observation to what he wrote about in the first version Whenit comes to students and divorce it is only mentioned in chapter six ofthe book This chapter starts with Clark relating two stories ofstudents who parents have divorced but have not told anybody about thedivorce and have forbidden their children from talking about it toanybody This situation caused both students to resent their parentsfor both the divorce and forcing them to keep it a secret Clark usesthese stories as an example of what he sees as a trend of parentsputting their needs before their children He goes on to explain how the definition of what a family is haschanged greatly over that last few years Family used to be defined astwo or more people related by birth marriage or adoption who residein the same household However today the definition has come to bewhatever a person feel s is a family to them This changing definitionClark argues has caused students to lose a safe refuge and a steadysupport structure To support this argument he points out that studies have shown thatstudents from intact two parent households where there is support andacceptance tend to have fewer problems than those who come other typesof households He then describes behaviors that he observed ofstudents from unstable homes These behaviors included various attemptsto fill the lack of familial affection with temporary relationshipsdrugs sex and other behaviors These attempts to fill the need for affection outside of the familymight point to how these students view God With the desire for reliefoutside the family they are showing that they feel that they cannottrust their parents This lack of trust and relationship with theirphysical parents would seem also to hamper their trust and relationshipwith God as their spiritual parent leading
