The age in Athens in which Draco a noble lived was an age of disorder Athens drastically needed a code of law Without one they feared civil war would begin Draco therefore was appointed to draw one up This code was very similar to Hammurabis code but was not based on it Like Hammurabi Draco believed that punishment for crimes should be harsh He believed cruel punishments would deter people away from committing crimes However Draco introduced the concept that justice should be blind everyone was equal in the eyes of the law Middle class upper class and lower class all are judged the same under Dracos code of laws The social class that most likely supported this idea was the middle class They didnt have to commit crimes to survive normally so they didnt have to worry about the severity of the punishments Not only that but the liked the idea that in the eyes if the law they were equal to the upper class They strongly supported the idea that the upper class couldnt get away with a crime with only a minimal punishment where as someone in the lower or middles classes would be severely punished The upper class probably opposed the code of laws They probably werent happy with being on the same level as the lower and middle class The severe punishments had nothing to do with their opinion because they rarely if ever were in a position to commit crimes to live The lower class more than likely also apposed this code of law Often people in this class were forced into crimes in order to survive and greatly feared the severe punishments set by Draco On the other side the lower class favored being judged the same as the middle and upper classes As we can see Dracos code of laws were very harsh but this introduced a very important concept justice is blind This idea still
