COMMUNICATION PERSPECTIVES AND METHODS The drama in the pub In this assignment I am going to dramaturgicaly analyze the interaction in a random seller buyer scene in a pub To do this I will first have to explain the term of dramaturgical perspective and then use it to analyze the scene By the end of my work I will have analyzed the interaction using the dramaturgical perspective All the worlds a stage And all the men and women merely players They have their exits and their entrances And one man in his time plays many parts His acts being seven ages William Shakespeare As You Like It Act 2 Scene 1 As Shakespeare in dramaturgy and literature compares the world to a theater stage and the people to actors we can also find this theory in the science of communication Goffman a Chicago School symbolic interactionist 19561973 has analyzed and described how people negotiate and confirm their identities in face-to-face situations and the meanings of those encounters He set up the theory of dramaturgical approach 1959 in which he states that interaction is a performance shaped by environment and audience constructed to provide others with impressions that are consonant with the desired goals of the actor This means that we are actually acting out a role while interacting with someone in order to maintain that role given to us by society There are certain ways and rules described by Goffman how we act and keep our integrity One of the things we need to do in our interactions with others
