DREAM RECALL FREQUENCY AND DREAM DETAIL BY PERSONALITY BEHAVIOR AND ATTITUDE DREAMING Dream Recall 1 Many studies of dreams investigated how personality behavior and attitude mediate dream recall but few distinguish between measures of dream recall frequency the number of dreams experienced in a specified time frame and dream detail individual ratings of vividness or detailed content of dreams This study was given to undergraduates dream recall frequency and dream detail manifested different patterns of association in relation to behaviors attitude and personality Dream recall frequency was associated with the frequency of experiencing emotionally disturbing dreams and trying to interpret dreams Males and females both held positive attitudes toward dreaming females experienced more emotionally disturbing dreams and felt unable to control their dreams Dream recall is an estimate of the number of dreams experienced in a specified time frame known as dream recall frequency DRF while in other studies dream recall involves the detailed content of dreams DETAIL sometimes referred to as vividness intensity or emotionality To clarify these consider that an individual may recall experiencing three dreams over the course of a week but may only be able to recount the contents of one of those dreams Problems may happen when putting these together Historically Freud proposed that dreams included desires which were transformed at an unconscious level into more acceptable content Failure to do this would result in repression of the dreams Repressed dreams could only be remembered through psychoanalytic treatment Some people have identified memory failure in the waking state such as salience which predicts that events that are meaningful emotional Dream Recall 2 bizarre or intense in content will be recalled more readily than neutral events and interference have also been used to explain failure to recall dreams Researchers identified behaviors and attitudes associated with increased dream recall frequency and dream detail Writing down the dreams by keeping a journal and trying to figure out
