Dreams are one of the great mysteries of human life We all have themoften times we can recall exactly what happened during them yet no one candefinitively state the reason why our mind creates the images it does Manypsychologists and psychiatrists alike believe that dreams are a vividgateway into an individuals inner workings and thoughts As Marsha Normanonce wrote Dreams are illustrations from the book your soul is writingabout you In the book Crime and Punishment Feodor Dostoevsky brilliantlyuses dreams as a way of defining characters and furthering the plot Byexamining how dreams help us understand the characters of Raskolnikov andSvidrigailov and why Dostoevsky utilized dreams so often in the novel abetter understanding of the impact of dreams in Crime and Punishment can beachieved A good part of the novel takes place inside of Raskolnikovs mindWhat he is thinking what he is planning what he is feeling Howeveroften times when Raskolnikov is conscious we cant get a clear picture ofhis thoughts because he himself doesnt even know what he is reallythinking It is well documented that he has a split personality and thathe is teetering on the edge of insanity so his conscious thoughts areoften muddy and unclear As a result we get the best description ofRaskolnikovs character and what he is feeling at the present time throughhis vivid dreams Raskolnikov has several dreams throughout the novel thatby themselves could describe the plotline fairly well The most memorable dream of Raskolnikovs is the dream of the oldhorse being beaten to death It occurs when Raskolnikov is frantic over theidea of whether or not it is going to happen Drunk he falls into somebushes on Petrovsky Island and falls asleep immediately He dreams that heis a child again He and his father are on their way to the cemetery andwalk past a tavern where there is a lot of commotion
