Water is the main component of life Drinking water is a fundamental need A person should drink at least two liters a day But how can we satisfy this basic need by keeping our environment safe and how can tap water contribute in this Can bottled water contribute in this For this we need to understand the concept of tap water as well as bottled water Tap water supply comes from either a surface water or groundwater source while the bottled water is packed and sealed in containers for human consumption The sources of bottled water are springs aquifers or municipal supplies and may be modified to make it possible for drinking The demand for tap water has consistently decreased and consistently increased for bottled water during the last decade For example in New Zealand per capita consumption of bottled water has increased at a rate of 20 per year from 1997 to 2004 In Eastern European countries and in the AsiaPacic region the consumption increased by about 13 per year and in the USA and Western Europe this rate was about 6 per year from 1997 to 2004 The rate of drinking tap water has dropped slightly during the past couple of years whereas per capita consumption of bottled mineral water in United states has grown continuously during the past couple of years According to the Beverage Marketing Corporation since 2002 the US market has seen an increase inbottled waterproduction of more than 9 percent per year Imports of bottled water are almost tripled during the past decade It took thirty years to bottled water industry to convince people that tap water is not safe and healthy or even taste worse than bottled water In 2000 Susan Wellington the VP of Gatorade said When were done tap water will be relegated to showers and washing dishes Now people believe that Bottled water is pure and healthier than tap water Bottled water
