Why cant we drug test welfare recipients I was tested for my job Public assistance or welfare aid plays an important role in the society especially in the lives of the poor and financially unstable families Given that taxpayers fund assistance and aid programs it is critical to exercise responsibility and accountability both by the recipient and the provider In this respect beneficiaries of government aid should be law-abiding citizens In other words individuals who seek government assistance should be subjected to background checks and drug testing since it include the fact that this move could possibly save the government money by taking drug addicts off welfare programs Still others reason that since those who regularly work could be drug tested at any time due to their jobs so those receiving welfare should have to undergo the same testing Even though every citizen is entitled to hisher rights and freedoms such rights and freedoms cannot become the basis of non-screening practicesIn the recent past the number of individual andor family recipients of public assistance has significantly reduced Kirst-Ashman 2009 The reduction is because of drug testing in order to receive the benefits Following this observation the idea of testing for illicit drugs is appropriate In essence possession use and distribution of drugs and substance are illegal Screening welfare applicants would ensure that the affected persons are accorded the help they need rather than placing them on government aid with their drug problems and subsequent future uncertainIllicit drugs and high poverty levels constitute a critical social problem In that regard welfare funds should go to the most appropriate programs Illicit drugs carry an aspect of criminality that would have to be addressed before public assistance is availed Screening for illicit drugs therefore would discourage the affected persons from seeking government aid thus concentrating on public-provided programs such rehabilitation Workforce Program and Work for Welfare are programs available as well as Vocational Rehabilitation Program
