Our known world has seen us human beings evolve from our most primal creatures into the people that have created society today Since there is so many of us occupying this planet Conflict with each other is bound to play a role in this epic human drama From small signs of force to all out wars of aggression conflict has helped us shape the society in which we live Wars are fought Battles won People live and die such as nations and empires rise and fall But as we evolved we created mechanisms to resolve conflict rather than produce it A modern arm of this resolution is the United Nations The UN which is comprised of most of the worlds nations to promote world wide security and has taken the role of global peace keeper Peacekeeping in this day in age involves intervening militarily with warring parties that are at each others throats for whatever reason The UN has dealt with many peacekeeping issues all different to handle each particular situation around the world One in particular that I will be discussing The United Nations Force in Cyprus UNFICYP and how it played an important role in the Cold Post Cold War politics In this essay I will assess the effectiveness of the UNFICYPs peacekeeping operation along with the political implications and how the lessons of the UNFICYP can be applied to modern UN peacekeeping scenarios Abraham Lincoln once said A house divided cannot stand This same quote can be applied to the island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea The third largest island in the Mediterranean Cyprus has been home to a host of visitors from the Romans to the Christian crusaders of the medieval era Strategically located forty miles off the southern coast of Turkey Cyprus has played a crucial role of base-island for foreign powers to station there as a vital trade link to the Middle East Like the British who took
