Classroom error correction is of no long term benefit to language learning DiscussA considerable amount of debate exists with regards to the appropriate amount of error correction a language teacher should offer to a student One of the fundamental purposes of error analysis is to classify the principles which would lead to successful error correction and ways in which doing so can differ greatly depending on the individual The greater question being analysed in the present work aims to study the impact of error correction to the language learner and if it is of long-term benefit for their language acquisition process Error analysis can be traced back to the behaviourist learning theory viewing errors as old habits that hinder new habits These old habits can originate from the L1 and inhibit the learning process of acquiring an L2 As Ellis puts it where the first and second language share a meaning but express it in different ways an error is likely to arise in the L2 because the learner will transfer realization device from his first language into the second Ellis understndng scnd lng acq 198522There are different perspectives on the amount of error correction a student should receive indeed however there are many positive views in favour of error correction marking it successful As an example Fathman and Whalley1990 conducted a study where they corrected grammar content grammar and content and neither and as a result they concluded correcting grammar errors universallyfor every student and every composition brought about improvement of the grammar of rewritesJames 1998246 According to James there is no evidence that error correction affects the cognitive learning process in other words error correction does not lead to misunderstanding However Krashen argues through his affective filter hypothesis that error correction can increase a learners anxiety and that can obstruct the learning processKrashen 1982 Two terms that are commonly discussed regarding error analysis are explication and explanation In regards to the overall
