Today we think of ourselves as people independent entities distinct from one another Our bodies are separate and we as people are separate from one another However this has not always been the belief In early society there was not a word that simply meant person There were instead words that meant a community of beings Morris 2 The discovery of the individual was a long process that took on many forms Colin Morris discusses all the ways in which every aspect of society was affected by this new view in his book The Discovery of the Individual 1050-1200 This discovery is important because it has affected all the societies that followed The lasting influences of this time period are prevalent even in todays society Know yourself was a common saying of this time Self-knowledge was one of the dominant themes of this age The age did have words to express interest in ones personality The inner man was a mystery that the people wanted to uncover The people of this age wanted to know themselves They were interested in the thinking motives and experiences of man Being true to oneself was to know oneself A man could not be called a sinner because he did what was objectively wrong nor because he felt a sinful desire sin purely and simply lay in consent to sinful desire 75 This shows the movement away from external regulations and into the basis of intention deciding if one acted ethically If someone sinned on purpose then they were in the wrong but if someone sinned while in the act of something they believed to be right they were not sinning The emergence of this kind of ethics was had an important influence on future societies ethical ideas This new view of ethics is displayed in todays society with the court system When someone commits a murder the circumstances and that persons mental status are taken into consideration A
