Although New Jersey does not have any English Only policies the majority of states as well as some US Territories do There has been much debate as to whether or not such policies should even exist and of those that already exist if they are even constitutional Those for and those against such policies both have numerous points supporting their opinions the argument against is more compellingMany of the arguments of those who support English Only policies can be attributed to the idea that having consistency and through it unity and efficiency is what would be best for the country They claim that if there is only one language then everyone is on par with one another no one would be held back nor left behind due to a language barrier and it would help prevent conflicts 1-2 In addition this would help to reduce clustering and isolation of various peoples by promoting equality and the ability to easily fit in anywhere rather than having immigrants seeking to gather with only those of similar origins and heritage 1 It is also suggested that there is a large amount of government waste from providing special aid or services for those who do not speak English such as having documents translated or translators readily available 2 Eliminating this waste would allow for funds and other resources to be allotted elsewhere and put to better use In addition many would no longer have the handicap of having to rely on others as much as they would now be capable of handle more on their own These points may seem reasonable and well intended but much of the information is inaccurate or all together falseA number of the arguments against English only policies are revealing what points of those for such policies are inaccurate or false One such point is conflicts resulting from the use of different languages Linguistic
