In the short story The Gospel According to Mark by Jorge Luis Borges there is a disconcerting idea which seems to be prevalent in several short stories There are many examples of symbolism and some strong religious references made during this story The story begins by describing the protagonist a medical student named Baltasar Espinosa whom the author has portray many of the traits and mannerisms which are associated with a savior or hero During this description the author goes to great lengths to depict the protagonist as a gentle and kindhearted individual The authors description of Espinosa makes the reader believe him to be Christlike This attitude that is given to Espinosa is displayed when the author tells us that he dislikes arguing and gamblingLiterature 521 The author then gives him a far different reason for being a gentle person than religion he tells us that Espinosa has an acquiescent nature and a natural complacencyLiterature 522 Though the author gives Espinosa a very gentile nature he does not make him out to be a saint relating to the reader a fight that Espinosa got into and also relating that the main character only prays because his mother told him to not due to any faith of his own Once Espinosa arrives at his cousins farm several seemingly unrelated events culminate in a very disconcerting mistake of identity First of these events occurs when Espinosa decides to grow a beard giving him a new and more holy appearanceLiterature 523 The next event happens in the very next paragraph Espinosa finds a bible and begins to read it to the Gutres family Probably the single most contributing factor to the Gutres mistake is the fact that whenever he came across the words of Christ Espinosa rises to his feet and speaks in an orators voiceLiterature 524 All of these coinciding events lead to the Gutres making an unhealthy correlation between Espinosa and Christ The Gutres begin
