Children make up about one fourth of the United States population These children are the next generation of Americas political leaders Therefore the more knowledge children acquire the more they will contribute to the development of society The future strongly depends on children because they will soon be making important decisions and regulations for the country In history children were exposed to events such as the sectionalism the Civil War and discrimination of pre civil rights All of which were problems brought to America by racism American authors used childrens perspectives of racism to portray an unbiased view of African Americans as they struggle to achieve equality in America Before the Civil War children were exposed to different tensions over slavery between the north and south The country was divided and sectionalism was occurring in both regionsSince industrialization and factories were rapidly increasing in the north slavery did not apply to them They wanted to abolish slavery and free the African Americans However the southerners were for slavery because they needed people to work on their farms In the article Recollections of Life in Maryland by Mary and Joseph Seth the authors emphasize As war drew near feeling ran high in Maryland Abolitionists were working among the slaves persuading them to desert During the year 1859 it is believed that John Brown was on the Eastern Shore secretly inciting the slaves to rise and attack the whites At this time an excited slave confessed to her mistress that there was a plot to attack the whites that night This news spread rapidly and precautions were taken at once by the men to protect their homes and familiesSeth Children residing in the north lived in constant fear every day that the tensions from the war would disturb their families and destroy their homes For children living in the south however it was a different complication In The Northern Homefront by Charles W Bardeen it defines these
