Federalists and the War of 1812 Due to their anti-war opinions the Federalists were viewed by some as disloyal and treasonous during the war of 1812 As shown in Article III section III of the constitution treason is the act of levying War against this country or in adhering to its Enemies giving them Aid and Comfort No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act or on Confession in open Court According to Random House Websters Dictionary 3rd edition disloyalty is not being true to your duty of obligation These definitions will shows that although disloyal the federalists were not treasonous During this time the Federalists didnt want to go to war and for a very understandable reason None of the reasons for the USs involvement in the War made a difference to them The federalists lived in the north primarily and didnt care that the southern states were losing slaves to Florida which was under Spanish control The Federalists also maintained a thriving industrial society and didnt need to expand westward or north into Canada in order to obtain land for living and farming Finally the Federalists didnt care about the impressments of sailors only that the goods were being imported In the year 1813 one of Bostons newspapers printed an article in answer to the claim that disloyalty flourished in New England The editor believed that a French-loving cabal of Virginia planter lordlings had provoked unnecessary hostilities which meant that the Virginians were trying to start a war with England to prevent England from fighting France In the beginning of the article the author writes We are plunged into a war without a scene of enmity or a perception of sufficient provocation which states that the federalists were forced into the war they didnt choose to be in it The federalists had nothing to do with this war and they didnt
