Barbara Crossette an American journalist for NY Times reviews in her editorial how several Eastern traditions and practices can be and are frowned upon in America In this article Testing the limits of tolerance as cultures mix does freedom mean accepting rituals that repel the west she elaborates on some of these controversial customs such as female circumcision coining scarification and arranged marriage These topics bring to light the differences that two cultures may have between them and if we should accept them as they are or if we have the right to label these as immoralIn Africa female genital mutilation or female circumcision is a common practice that is preformed on most young girls This has drawn places in America to consider adapting this practice in order to satisfy the immigrants who believe in it Subsequently this has caused uproar as many feel this act is criminal and outrageous Incidentally this has brought us to consider what exactly conventional values are and who has the power to determine them as such Whether or not we as Americans have the power to judge and other those with diverse mores conveys us to reevaluate cultural relativism and how ethnocentric we truly are Crossette presents several stimulating notions in her work one very vitalizing phrase that stood out the most would most easily be enforcers of mainstream culture Crossette 2 This establishes an overwhelming question as to whom these enforcers may be Are they celebrities The media Everyday citizens The government Who has the right to regulate a set of standards to which Americans cultural preferences have to follow to And how are these ideals being chosen One person certainly cannot make these executive decisions alone because everything is up for interpretation Another very prominent quote comes from her interview with Jessica Neuwirth an international lawyer who states that People who control culture tend to be the people in power Crossette 3 This speaks volumes to
