Tennisse Williamss uses the parallel of MrWingfeild and Tom to foreshadow the departure of toms escape Amandas biases about MrWingfeild caused her to be so blinded by the past to oversee what was directly in front of her in the present Throughout the plot Tom shows how he gradually grew apart from the chain he was tied to for being Laura and Amandas breadwinner Toms uses the idea of escapism throughout the play showing that he was unhappy by the use of alcohol The fact that Amanda is in denial and obsession with the past drove both tom and Mr Wingfeild awayIn the novel tom touhes upon the idea that there is a difficulty accepting reality whn the reality is so harsh and true This is very much the case with all of the Wingfeild family which results in each of them to find a way to escape the present to find comfort with themselves nd reality One person in particular who does this is Tom as of likely his father He uses direct escapes such as going to the movies and drinking While tom is able to to this much better than most of his family he still struggles These ecapes which bring them temporary comfort result in them all having no drive to live the life that they truly desire They are living someoelses lives in their minds which is helping them overcome the rough path that they are currently on On the opposing end there is Amanda who has too much hope and drive that end up driving both MrWingfeild and Tom away This is where there parallel come in they both have such little drive where they are chained to this women who is obsessed with her self image the two extreme opposites cause them to leave The fact that Tom and his father cannot except reality is what causes them to both be losers and unlikely to thrive in their
