Suicide amongst teens in the LGBTQ Lesbian Gay Bi-Sexual Transgender and Queer community has garnered a particularly high amount of mainstream media attention in the last year This is due in large part to a number of incidents involving teens and young adults that identified as gay There was one particular incident involving a student at Rutgers University in New York The college student was outed as being gay via the Internet when his roommates streamed an online video of him having sexual relations with another man After discovering that he had been outed so publicly the student took his own life This is just one story among many in the United States where young adults in the LGBTQ community are faced with bullying ridicule and shame that has led in some cases to suicide This paper will explore the depth of the problem in the United States as well as looking at ways experts and individuals in their communities are attempting to provide both treatment and prevention for this growing public problem For this paper I will look at LGBTQ teens aged 12-18 My focus is specifically on high school and middle school aged teenagers who may just be becoming aware of their sexuality and dealing with any societal impact that they may endure as a result I will explore both the struggles many teens face with coming out to family in the home extended family friends and peers at school and the ongoing struggle that an individual may face being a LGBTQ teen in 21st century America For this paper I have reviewed only relevant sources that were written from 2001 to the present This choice was made in order to ensure that the information provided in this paper is relevant to current day struggles for LGTBQ teens PrevalenceStigmaWhat it means to be LGBTQ in America has changed dramatically in the past couple decades Public acceptance of the LGTBQ community has been
