At 938 PM August 26 1987 a 1977 Z28 Camaro pulled out of the NorwoodAssembly Plant The spot it had just vacated was marked as beingreserved for Wes Knox Floor Manager and it was he who had just drivenoff in the American Classic Wes had been the head mechanic on thefactory floor for ten years It was as high as you could go in his lineof work without taking a desk job and he liked it that way He liked tocompare himself to his father once a sergeant in an Army infantrycompany He went as high as he could go without going officer thenrefused promotions until he left for a job at the plant Whenever hisfather had had a particularly rough day at the plant hed down a coldbeer and say to Wes smiling forget the money boy You were borninto a family of working men that means we work standing on our feetWesley Sr had overcome hardship with pride pride in doing a gooddays work and for Wes thirty-four years at the Norwood Plant he hadfollowed in his fathers footsteps On November 6 1986 GM announced the closure of the Norwood AssemblyPlant 4200 workers found themselves without jobs and the city ofNorwood lost 35 of its tax base In the year that followed Wes and hiswife Carrie made all the arrangements they felt possible to provide afuture for their children Certain the town would waste away with theplants closing they decided it was best to move south near Carriesmother There were good schools there both colleges and high schoolsThere wasnt a factory nearby but no one would hire a floor manager ofhis age anyway not with pedigreed college grads flooding the industryCarrie and the kids left a couple of months ago They would be settledand as prepared as theyd ever be for the new school year Wes stayedIt wasnt the last months pay check he was after he just felt he hadto see this
