Astronomy is the study of celestial bodies in the universe Within this field many new things are figured out everyday because of the innovative technologies constantly being made These are discoveries are classified into many different groups including exoplanets stars asteroids meteorites comets and planets In order to be a planet the object must orbit the sun be round and clear its orbit of debris Although the accepted theory is that each planet formed at the same time every planet is extremely different from one another The fifth planet from the Sun Jupiter is very unique and intriguing making it an interesting body to study within the Solar System It is known that the solar system formed 46 billion years ago Ray Spangenburg and Kit Moser co-authors of A Look at Jupiter describe the formation of the Milky Way as a giant disk-shaped cloud of dust and hot glowing gas This disk called a nebula bowed in creating a gaseous center that was able to pull other material into itself Once the nebula had enough mass it began to undergo nuclear fusion which formed the Sun Next planetesimals or small clumps of excess material formed These planetesimals eventually were able to collect enough material to form the planets known today Spangenburg 21 The textbook Astronomy Today which was written by Eric Chaisson retired senior scientist and director of educational programs at the space Telescope Science Institute and Steve McMillan a current physics professor at Drexel University and researcher for Princeton says that in the area closer to the sun the temperature and density were much higher than the regions farther away This created differentiation of the elementswhich caused the portion closer to the sun to contain heavy elements and the outer section of the solar system to have the lighter and more abundant elements of hydrogen and helium 150-151Since Jupiter is 52 Astronomical Units away from the Sun it is a member of the outer
