Grendels lair is associated with death and darkness in many ways In the poem it states they lived in secret places windy cliffs cliffs in general are associated with death because cliffs are usually danger zones cliffs are normally where people fall of and die causing the word to associate with death The poem also uses words such as black clouds and mist these words sound cold and dark and gloomy just like Grendel Grendel was cold and lifeless he killed innocent people and ate them The paragraph describing Grendels lair used the words frozen and snakelike these words both associated Grendel with death and darkness because frozen to me sounds cold and bitter it is very cold in winter and this is when there is no life causing the cold to be associated with death Snakelike is another example of why Grendel is associated with death since snakes are usually venomous and kill Snakes are also associated with evil just like in Adam and Eve the snake was the antagonist causing snakes to be associated with cheating and deceiving The poem states At night that lake burns like a torch that line represents death and darkness because just like hell it burns like a torch It burns with the flames of death which is not only symbolic but true because every night when Grendel came home he always had dead bodies with him The poem also states No wisdom reaches such depths meaning that it is just so dark and evil down there in his lair that no wisdom and knowledge can reach his lair Death and darkness has clogged up his lair that no good can enter his lair or to his life All these words cause the readers to associate Grendel with death and darkness
