Whether it be jihad or simply the desire to gain power the Muslimcommunity has employed art and architecture to spread their religionacross Europe From the very beginning of Islam in 622 CE a place forthe religious community to gather was considered very important Infact very soon after the arrival in Medina Muhammad ordered work tobegin on the first mosque This structure was a very simple open spacein order for the people to gather and worship The Quran gave no setguidelines on how to build such a structure but through Islams mainideals they built something that would function as the perfect place toworship Since the completion of this first mosque in 623 the functionhas essentially remained the same yet the form is much different Inexamining the pillars and arches in La Mezquita it is not hard toimmediately recognize the drama that the repetion of the arches createsAlthough the drama seems evident I argue that the structure isultimately based on a specific structure the Muslim religion lays outthus causing little drama The ultimate ideal of Islam that There isno God but Alla and one must be completely submissive to him is shownthrough the simplicity of the structure repetition and sheer size ofthe arches When you walk into La Mezquita of Cordoba several initial reactionsmay take over A few feelings that may come to mind are excitementoverwhelment and even belittlement Once the initial reaction is overit is easier to zoom-in and look at the details in the actual structureof the arches There are over 800 of these pillars made of granite andmarble with these double tiering arches alternating between stone andbrick to create the red and white stripes Each of the pillars seem tobe spaced evenly apart connected to each other through the archesabove The slight horse-shoe shape in the arch is also noticeable whichwas a huge advancement at the time that Abd-rahman built La mezquita in785 The style seems to be a unique twist on the combination
