Guilt is one conflict that is constantly mentioned in the book The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale experience the effects of guilt in different forms and are forced to handle theyre dilemmas Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale are both convicted for having the sin of adultery Hester dealt with her sin of adultery in a way it help her and enforced positive effects on her and used it to her advantage while Dimmesdale dealt with his sin in a way that led his to negative outcomes for himThroughout the novel there were different forms of guilt which were dealt with in different ways Hester Prynne committed the sin of adultery She was held guilty of the crime and was punished by society which forced her to wear the scarlet letter Hester takes the scarlet letter without shame and she deals with her sin by using her punishment to her advantageHester also deals with her guilt by seeing the light in her situation Shalt 2 Since Hester isnt part of the Puritan society she doesnt have to conform to them anymore For example Hester feels free to express her opinions in her house in the forest and does so by doing things such as letting her hair down or letting Pearl venture outside Shalt 2 Soon after people who begin to notice this change in Hester begun to see a new meaning to the scarlet letter as shown in Chapter 13 Hester does not feel shame for her actions which is why she is able to use her situation to her advantage and handle her sin and guilt so effectivelyHester has fornicated with Dimmesdale therefore he is also guilty of adultery Dimmesdale manages his guilt of adultery in a different way than Hester He pretends like it doesnt exist Dimmesdale feels truly shameful of the sin and his guilt increases after the community anguished Hester Dimmesdale has to confront himself
