Culture can form invisible bonds between members in a community that hold people with the same cultural background together passing on the values This propagation of values transmits cultural knowledge and retains relationships among people as well as builds up a long-term tradition after years and years Culture relies on future generations of people to strengthen and reference it as past generations die out Therefore people find an importance in preserving their culture especially one that is less mainstream For example in Leslie Silkos The Man to Send Rain Clouds and Scott Momadays The Way to Rainy Mountain the authors depict the strong desire to hold onto ones culture through the traditions and older generations of each character This desire conveys the importance of cultural survival for natives in the United States as the elderly die and tradition is lost In her short story Silko represents the Lagunas demand for their own burial practices and their difficult relationship with the priest which conveys the tribes need to preserve their own customs When the characters Leon and Ken encounter the priest after finding their so-called grandpa dead they lie about the old mans death the priest asks Did you find old Teofilo and Leon responds We were just out to the sheep camp Everything is OK now Silko 739 Leon chooses not to tell the priest about Teofilos death in order to avoid hearing the priests input on a burial ceremony Leons lie conveys the issue between the beliefs of the native tribe and the Catholic priest Once the priest finally discovers Teofilo died he asks Leon Why didnt you tell me he was dead I could have brought the Last Rite anyway Silko 741 Silko represents the priests confusion as to why Leon chose not to tell him about the death and his feelings of exclusion from the community When Leon responds It wasnt necessary Father the priest states For a Christian burial it
