Revolutions often occur through similarly structured events Throughout the different stages of a revolution similar reasons for uprising take place The Enlightenment period through the 17th and 18th century developed many ideas of political freedom These ideas inspired lower classes to liberate themselves from their mistreatment from upper classes The French Revolution 1789-1794 was started on a basis of inequalities in the social hierarchy and a capital bourgeoisie They struggled with economic issues that eventually led to the peoples revolt French Revolution Haiti was a French colony with a large economy primarily based on sugar trade Slaves who made up 90 of the Haitian peoples were also affected by Enlightenment principles and realized they had the power to rebel and earn their rights as human beings leading to their revolt 1791-1804 Haitian Revolution Although the two were similar in terms of political structure the economic aspect of their revolt and overall results separated themClass antagonisms are often a main source for reform in the preliminary stage of a revolution In France a divided social hierarchy existed consisting of the royals at the top then clergy and nobles and at the bottom the bourgeoisie and the peasantry The peasants were part of the Third Estate this was the lower class but also the majority of the population There was no social mobility and the clergy and nobles dominated politics leaving the peasantry powerless French Revolution In Haiti there existed a similar divide between the whites regarded as the highest class gens de couleurs mixed race and the African slaves Slaves were a majority of the population in Haiti and were essential to the economy as they provided free labor yet were treated with no respect Haitian Revolution In both cases the lower classes were upset with the class divide and their mistreatment and because of this they saw reason for reformA decreasing economy leads to panic and stress in a country and can be another reason
