Started with many ended with few In the spring of 1607 English settlers began arriving on the James River in the Chesapeake Bay Virginia For some they hoped to own a piece of land Others dreamed for a start of a tobacco business hoping to become rich Unfortunately the dreams of these settlers came to an end By 1611 400 out of 500 colonists were dead Which brings the question Why did so many colonists die The three factors why the colonists died is because of poor relationship with the Powhatan Indians lack of water and lack of skillful workers The ideal cause of the deaths was the poor relation with the local Powhatan Indians According to Ivor Noel Hume in The Virginia Adventure a colonist named Francis West led 36 colonists to trade with the Powhatan When agreements between both groups did not go well the colonists wounded or killed two Indians Doc D At this point the Powhatan Indians are furious with the poor treatment from the settlers Adapted from J Frederick Fausz in The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography between the August of 1609 till the end of 1609 the Powhatan Indians killed nearly 200 colonists by weapon and by a siege of the fort at Jamestown where they did not allow any food to get in Doc E First impression is important especially when Wests men came to trade with the Powhatan Indians if they did not act savage their relationship with the Indians would have been fine Because of their actions the colonist brought the hatred between the two groups leading to their deaths Water was another factor to their death in several ways Because of their locations the water became brackish meaning it was too salty By drinking salty water it caused people to become sick Doc A Not only is the water salty but also the river water often became dirty According
