Throughout Americas great history we have overcome many things From slavery that resulted in a war that threatened to destroy our young nation To racial prejudice and social reform America is a country that prides itself on acceptance of all races religion lack of religion and opinions But even amidst all this acceptance and teaching of acceptance there is still one skeleton in the closet Despite thousands of documented years of homosexuality gays are still striving for equal rights There is not much legal reason that gays should not be married many arguments against gay marriage have little or no validity and gays are only asking for the same rights as all human beings The United States Bill Of Rights states in the first amendment that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof or abridging the freedom of speech or of the press or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances I would like to focus mainly on the first line Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion This is also known as a separation of church and state Because of this religion should have no ability to impose rules on anyone But it seems that the main argument against gay marriage is a religious one To me it seems that these people refuse to perform their own separation of church and state Relying on their religion for a basis of deciding what rights people should be entitled to Blocking all other valid reasons related to the matter Also Oregons constitution states that all Oregonians are entitled to equal protection under the law This has been interpreted to mean that gay couples must have the same rights to marriage and divorce as straight couples So putting a ban on gay marriage is a direct contradiction of the equal protection clause It appears
