How Cultures Resist Modernity: Cultural Purity and Liminality in Bali and Haiti

In responding to James Clifford's "The Pure Products Go Crazy" from The Predicament of Culture Twentieth-Century: Ethnography, Literature, and Art, the student takes Clifford's use of a William Carlos Williams poem as a starting point to contest Clifford's claims about the end of "pure" or untouched cultures. The student uses two examples of temporary status advancement within liminal cultural sites: Balinese cockfights and Voodoo in Haiti.
