How Michael Crichton Blends Historical Realities with Magic in Eaters of the Dead
This analytical essay assesses the use of historical fact in Michael Crichton's novel Eaters of the Dead. The student finds that much is drawn from real life, including descriptions of life for Arabs and Vikings during the time period, but the introduction of fantasy and magic later in the book clearly deviates from reality.

"Putting the textbook and novel in conversation allows your essay to productively explore the historical and cultural elements. The premise of the thesis is somewhat odd (the novel, as I recall, was never marketed as nonfiction), but I see that this is in response to the prompt, which you target directly and with supporting details in your essay. Well done!
I have a few recommendations regarding the quotations, which are doing good work as evidence in the paper. I notice many of them are preceded by a comma splice. When you have two independent clauses in a sentence, a comma isn't "strong" enough to connect or separate them. So, for example, your first quote (about scary Vikings) would need to be headed off with a colon (...a truly frightening group to come across: "In the ninth century, ...")
It looks like most of your quotes would be better introduced with a colon, but you may want to keep working with the syntax to make sure this doesn't get repetitive. Make sure, as well, to fix the punctuation after the quotes, which should only come after the parenthetical citation: e.g., "...save his people and the kingdom of his father, Rothgar" (Crichton, pg. 47)."

Be sure to capitalize proper nouns (e.g. Egypt) and titles (e.g. Macbeth) in the essay title portion of your citation.
