I have always found joy in helping others For example through National Art Honor Society I participated in an art therapy program for senior citizens at CareOne in Livingston NJ and special needs children at the Early Childhood Learning Center in Chatham NJ In my school I was nominated for the Carlton Fellowship program where I mentored a younger student my senior year of high school These programs motivated me to find a career that would allow me to use my gifts to teach others I joined art club in seventh grade and began art service trips On these trips we would provide art therapy to senior citizens or those with special needs Art therapy taught me that helping someone draw a picture create a colorful card or print a jell-pad design could have a significant impact This impact comes in two ways it improves their self-esteem and their rapport with me This created ongoing rapport and relationships with a number of senior citizens and special needs children In contrast the Carlton Fellow program focuses on one specific student a seventh grader completed new to my school A new school can be daunting for a thirteen year old and my role was to provide orientation and guidance to ensure he adjusted to the new environment This required creating a rapport and relationship largely through talking My Grandfather once told me that I had an old soul a gift which allowed me to communicate with all kinds of people in many ways By using my gift in different situations I have been able to grow as a person and find how to make a career out of this gift To become a teacher you must be able to relate and have a rapport with your students By being a part of The National Art Honor Society and Carlton Fellow program I have been able to do this with people of all ages and circumstances These two
