Stem cells are nonspecific cells within the body which are not designated to a specific region or tissue which provides stem cells with particularly interesting characteristics Theoretically stem cells are capable of becoming a host of different specialized cells through the process of differentiation The reason for this is that stem cells are cultivated using embryonic blastocyst in which the inner cells are responsible for the creation of all major organs A large number of the embryonic blastocyst stem cells used in stem cell research are excess in vitro fertilized eggs In 2006 scientist discovered ways in which to reprogram adult cells to exhibit characteristics of non specificity The possible capabilities utilizing stem cell research include developed therapies addressing a host of diseases Applying a sociological perspective to stem cell research allows individuals to develop a critical understanding of discoveries within the scientific communities and their cultural reverberations within given social environments To construct a sociological narrative surrounding stem cell research it is imperative that individuals within and external to the scientific community understand the interconnected relationship between scientific progression and societal perceptions Technological and scientific diffusion within a given social environment is ultimately determined by the developmental trajectory of a given innovation Before stem cell is uniformly accepted by the general population the benefits and potential consequences associated with stem cell research must be presented in a way which applies sufficient weight to the cultural discussions surrounding stem cell research One such discussion may include the possibility of cultural limitations upon the scientific community A quasi-political wrinkle in the argument proposed in this paper is the challenge of collectivist perceptions of society What is proposed is that core societal norms are determined by monopolistic enterprise in which competing factions exert their respective values upon the general populace Thus the general argument posed by the paper is that sociological determinants created by certain ideological institutions within our society shape perceptions and realities for
