Growing up I heard all about how tanning would make you look thinnerand more beautiful In the town I grew up in if you were under eighteenyears of age your parents had to sign a consent form to tan Unfortunately my parents would not sign for me no matter how much Ibegged and prodded I just could not understand what the big deal was I mean yes I knew of the risks of the tanning bed but I wanted to glowlike the movie stars with their tans As soon as I turned eighteen Iwalked into that tanning salon and gave it a whirl and I loved it Iloved how it felt to relax in the tanning bed but most of all I lovedhow it made me look I tanned every day if not every other day for thebetter part of five years My skin was dark and the ultraviolet lightsgot rid of the acne that I had on my face People would often commenton how dark I was and I of course took it as a compliment Teenage girls who are stuck in their awkward stage will do anything andeverything to get the look of what they believe is beautiful Whatused to be a relaxation method has turned into an addiction andobsession for some young people It was not until my mother looked atme and said I looked terrible that I realized maybe I had gotten out ofcontrol My tanning obsession led to these little white spots all overmy body it was almost as if my skin had absolutely no pigment in thosespots Thankfully I made an appointment to see my dermatologist aftermy talk with my mother It turns out those little white spots werecalled sun spots Sun spots are cause from repeated exposure toultraviolet lights whether it be from the sun or the tanning bed Sunspots prevent melanin from being
