Molieres play Tartuffe represents the eighteenth century in multiple ways but with a twist to it One might say that the play actually represents that time frame in a very sarcastic manner The eighteenth century is the time known as the Age of Enlightment which was a cultural movement for intellectuals The purpose of the enlightment was to use the scientific method to advance human knowledge challenge the idea of faith and tradition and reconstruct the society using reason Tartuffe represents the eighteenth century thought through blind hypocrisy religious piety and the twist in female authorityA hypocrite is a person that puts on a false appearance pretending to act and believe in certain things when they really do not believe it those things Tartuffe is the main character that displays this type of person because throughout the play he reveals his true self around certain characters but acts all holy when he gets around other characters such as Orgon the farther being the main characters he acts to saved around Orgon is completely blinded by Tartuffes disguise to be such a man of God that it is causing pain within the family One can see that when Dorine the maid is telling Orgon about Elmire his wife and how she had been under the weather while he was away his only concern after every statement was concerning the well being of Tartuffe Act 1 Scene 4 pg 112-113 Another scene that allows us to see Tartuffes character is when he is alone with the maid He acts to innocent telling her to cover herself and all kinds of things but as soon as he is alone with Orgons wife he actions change He is basically hitting on her so we see that all the things that he said and the ways he acted towards the maid changed when he got alone with something he wanted Act III Scenes 2-3 pg 129-133 An important scene
