Science and utopia For me Brave new world is a visionary book that has depicted some of the characteristic of the world today One example is the genetic engineering of human beings that is becoming more and more a reality Scientists have created clones of animals and human beings are probably next They also have succeeded in modifying the genes of different organisms in order to improve them In Brave new world the technology of creating individuals using selected genetic material has already been acquired In fact humans are created after a prototype and thus conditioned for a certain way of life If we think of technology from the social point of view there are other similarities between the world today and Brave new world Nowadays we become more and more addicted to technology We are surrounded by magical devices such as television internet radio photo cameras and so on Most of the children can get access to computer games sophisticated toys radio that diminish their interest for out of doors activities and dont teach them to appreciate nature In Brave new world we can also observe the same dependability on science For example Lenina is shocked when Bernard proposes a stroll near the lake instead of playing state-of-the art engineered golf Some people may not agree with me on this point They might point out that people have more the opportunity to travel nowadays and thus enjoy nature To these I answer that some of this traveling is done for business and the remaining time is too short to truly get closer to nature In Brave new world the state uses the technology to control people First they are conditioned from the beginning to like their lives and not to mutter against the regime Second the state uses extensive propaganda to strengthen their innate beliefs People will argue that states in our days do not use technology to control the people and that
