My Beautiful Laundrett is a coming of age story set in 1980s Britain It is told from the point of view of a young Pakistani boy named Omar The main conflict in the movie is about whether Omar should go with traditional Pakistani values or if he should break free and undergo a cultural shift This question of cultural shift is compounded by touching upon many social taboos in England Homosexuality racial tension ethnicity and social classes are all issues that were and still are troubling to England and the rest of the world My Beautiful Laundrette accomplishes integrating these ideas through Omars internal battle While these ideas are key to the storyline no single one is the main focus Homosexuality is a sort of sub-plot that is not even mentioned until after the viewer sees that Johnny and Omar have established a work relationship Racial tension is placed into the plot through Johnnys friends who are a part of the national front However while racial tension adds to the conflict between Johnny and Omar and even leads to the eventual climatic fight scene it is not the defining characteristic of the plot Ethnicicty is best exemplified in the plot through the relationship between Nasser and Racheal We see that Nasser wants to break free from his boring family structure and have fun However the only means for him to do so require him to go outside of his own race Racheal is also ok in breaking the interracial taboo herself in order to be with Nasser The issue of social classes are both a reason for racial tension as well as an issue of importance to Omar It is only through this combination of conflict that we get the plot of My Beautiful Laundrette Therefore I believe that through the integration of homosexuality racial tension ethnicity and social classes My Beautiful Laundrette is a movie that is applicable today and is relevant to
