Nick Lampson once said There is nothing nobler or more admirable than risking your life for those you love In the Greek tragedy Antigone written by Sophocles Antigone believes that humanity and morals have priority over the king Creons law and she disobeys him accordingly Her love for and loyalty to her brother Polyneices along with her pride and stubbornness motivate her to break the law This results in her harsh punishment By the end of the play Creon finally realizes his mistake and attempts to change his ways but he is too late Antigone Eurydice and Haemon have all committed suicide Although Antigone made a decision to bury her brother and therefore break the law her decision to disobey Creons edict was still a better choice than Ismenes choice to obey the edict Family should always be loyal to one another Antigone reflects this by risking her own life while Ismene refuses to do so Antigones love and allegiance to her brother pushed her to a state of rebellion Despite the threat of execution Antigone buried her brother anyway Antigone explains to Ismene that Polyneices is her brother and so she owes it to him to give him a proper burial Antigone doesnt understand why Ismene will not assist her she tells Ismene and now you can prove what you are a true sister or a traitor to her family Prologue 26-27 But all Ismene can say is that it is forbidden against the law This is Antigones defense if its a crime the crime is holy Prologue 56 This is because she does not think the gods could possibly wish her brother Polyneices to be treated unfairly She says to Creon Isnt it a mans right to burial decreed by divine justice I dont consider your pronouncements so important that they can justoverrule the unwritten laws of heaven 2 98-99 Before making any decision a person should think about how that decision will
