Sacco-Vanzetti Case Editorial Immigrant Executions I have witnessed the horrid injustices that occurred in the Dedham courtroom where two Italian immigrants suffered grave humiliations via Judge Webster Thayer Not only did the judge incredibly downgrade the accused the jury and relatively the entire courtroom minus the Italian witnesses were bias and had their minds made up before the case even started Attracting worldwide attention the unjust court case carried on for SEVEN years with many objections and interjections The whole thing started when two Italian immigrants were caught up in a crime they obviously to some didnt commit They were accused of robbing a shoe factory and murdering the paymaster and a guard One of the defendants had 14 witnesses that were thrown out due to the fact that they were Italian immigrants During the next six years motions to submit new evidence and appeals for a new trial were frequently made and denied In 1925 Celestine Madeiros a man condemned to death for another murder confessed to having been a member of the gang that committed the South Braintree crimes In April 1927 however the death sentence was pronounced for Sacco and Vanzetti Appeals to the governor of Massachusetts Alvan Tufts Fuller induced him to appoint a committee composed of the president of Harvard University Abbott Lowell the president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Samuel Wesley Stratton and a former judge Robert Grant to investigate the trial and its aftermath On August 3 the governor announced that in accordance with the recommendation of the committee he would sustain the death sentences Several stays of execution followed but on August 23 1927 Sacco and Vanzetti were electrocuted The way and conditions that these immigrants died is a shame and a blemish on our countrys history To know that our wonderful country would sentence under any circumstances two men that were not proven to be the slightest bit guilty Our country
