INDEPENDENCE OR REVOLUTION An eight year conflict between the American Continental Army and the British Empire - a revolution or a war for Americas independence One could easily argue with validity that this eight-year conflict was a revolution and another with the same validity could argue that it was a war to gain independence In my opinion this conflict was a war to gain independence from a country that only wanted to exploit the riches of America and cared nothing for its colonists plain and simple The basis of my thoughts stem from my trusty dictionary which states that a revolution is the overthrowing of a government form of government or social system by those governed usually by forceful means with another government or system taking its place On the other hand independence is defined as Freedom from the influence control or determination of another or others America did not want to be ruled by a country that was viewed as a foreign nation During this period of history the majority of the Continental Army was composed of men born on American soil they did not view themselves as Englishmen Americas growth in population and diversity compared to British made the American colonies more difficult for Britain to rule This growth and diversity was an important precondition for the rise of an independence movement The American population also changed in composition The proportion of colonists who were English culture and ancestry steadily declined as migrants from other countries came to America Diversity also existed in religious life These reason also greatly helped pave the way for Americas move to independence The colonies were neglected by their supposed governing bodies and instead were exploited by their reforms and new taxes British leaders viewed American prosperity as a resource and taxing the colonies as a way to relieve their debts Americans wanted no part of this and dealt with the matter in
