Love at first sight is a concept explored in many plays novels poems movies and songs It is the ultimate connection with another person an instantaneous bond formed even before words are exchanged This instant attraction is always billed as being more than mere sexual lust and as equally felt on either side of the match In Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet and Philip Roths Portnoys Complaint the title characters are traditionally thought to have experienced this immediate love Both Romeo and Alex fall for their counterpart and claim it to be love however it appears to be more on the sexual side rather than true emotion Meeting wooing and exchanging vows all within hours each couple of the two books do appear to have fallen for each other at first glace The impact of their mutual emotion is certainly strong In William Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet their attraction toward each other is seemingly only sexual Upon analysis the reasons for Romeos supposed true love seem much less convincing than Juliets By nature Romeo is impetuous fickle and sexually motivated Tragically when his love for Juliet faces the ultimate test of overcoming their families ongoing feud he fails by killing Tybalt and ruining the couples chance at happiness Examination of evidence seen throughout the play illustrates that Romeo would have never lent himself to a fulfilling long-term relationship He is not deeply emotionally attached and moves quick from target to target At the beginning of the play Romeo is mourning his inability to woo and acquire Rosaline Juliets cousin He sinks into a deep depression and believes that he will never love again telling Benvolio thou canst not teach me to forget He is only brought out of it when he sees Juliet At first glance Romeo believes he is seeing angel and completely forgets about Rosaline Similarly in Philip Roths Portnoys Complaint Alexander is fickle with his women He is in need of great release
