A month ago due to my class writing 115 I read an opinion article in the NY Times entitled Is algebra Necessary Written by Professor Emeritus of Political Science Andrew Hacker who bases his column following exposure of various statistics and case studies to the contrary that algebra is unnecessary and irrelevant since only few percent of the school population use in their careers and many students fail In addition Hacker exhorts to find new alternatives for teaching mathematics In part I agree with him in looking for alternatives of teaching but to jump to the conclusion that it is not necessary is something unreasonable However I have asked myself the question Is algebra necessary Based on my experiences with math and having read opponents articles to Hackers arguments I have found enough reasons for considering algebra beneficial in all levelsOne Hackers argument states Making mathematics mandatory prevents us from discovering and developing young talent In other words Hacker is saying that forcing students to take algebra prompts them to give up I reject his argument Yes it is true that statistic numbers show that there are low percentages in math but saying that math is the main factor of failing and dropping out is a fallacy There is a prejudice towards mathematics Some people have come to believe that mathematics is difficult and that only people with privileged minds are able to solve mathematical problems Admittedly algebra is tedious but not impossible to solve For instance I started to learn algebra since I was 9 years old Obviously I did not do well at first but later with practice and good attitude I became a good student in algebra Now due to my computer career I am taking advance mathematics even it is harder How would I be able to take advanced math if I had not taken algebra in school My point is that I did not give up because math was hard
