AbstractThis paper is based on a two-week comprehensive field study completed in California in the summer of 2013 The main islands visited were Santa Catalina Island and Santa Cruz Island both of the Channel Islands and the San Francisco Bay Area Farallon islands The purpose of this paper is the following to define invasive rodents on island as a problem to discuss the topic of genetically engineering rodents and my overall thoughts at the end of this brief two-week course on the integration of both Thoughts and opinions were formed based on numerous interviews conferences surveys and a multitude of readings both fictional and non-fictionalIslands are well-documented hot spots for biodiversitywith twenty percent of terrestrial species found only on islands Stolzenburg 2011 Page 2The term biodiversity can be applied on multiple levels genetic species ecological and landscape Aschehoug 2013 On islands there is genetic diversity unlike other even nearby islandvarieties as in the Catalina Island Fox versus the Santa Cruz Island FoxKing2013 Likewise Metabarcoding analysis and the decreased cost of DNA technology leaves the potential for learning even more about distinct genetic diversity on islands Yu et al 2012 page 613Gross 2013 There are thousands of unique species on islands found nowhere else but on those islands such as the Santa Cruz Island Scrub Jay whose population does not reproduce with the mainland population Aschehoug 2013 In fact there are entire ecological communities so distinct from their mainland ancestors they are only able to survive on particular islands as that community Aschehoug 2013 Many islands lie along continental shelves and this brings abundant food sources with the travelling currents Hence many sea and shore birds as well as pinnipeds use islands as breeding and rearing grounds for their offspring Wimpfheimer 2013And while islands only account for five percent of total landmass they currently represent 40 of the International Union for the Conservation of Natures IUCN critically listed endangered species Andthe sobering statistic of 80 of
