Isolation is the separation from others not only physically but emotionally as well Having nobody to converse with can drastically change the minds filter of what is right and wrong Isolation is a main theme of the book for Walton Victor and the Monster because they all made choices that left them alone In Mary Shellys novel Frankenstein she argues that companionship is necessary for one to function normally and without it isolation leads only to dysfunction In the cold of winter Walton finds himself isolated from the rest of his crew on his journey to find new land He sees himself as superior and has very little interaction with his crew He frequently writes to his sister his only real companion He exemplifies his isolation when he says I have no friend Margaret when I am glowing with enthusiasm of successis a poor medium for communication of feeling 19 On his journey he brings Victor on his ship since he thinks that he could be his new friend He even talks to Victor about his desire to find someone to be with saying I spoke of my desire of finding a friend- of my thirst for a more intimate sympathy with a fellow mind than had ever fallen to my lot 30 Walton listens to Victors tale until he finally dies and soon comes face to face with the Monster that Victor depicts in his story Walton shows his extreme fear of becoming isolated when he states Over him hung a form which I cannot find words to describe - gigantic in stature yet uncouth and distorted in its proportionsI called on him to stay 221 Based on his own depiction and prior knowledge of the terrible things the Monster has done Walton still pursues friendship while all other members of society shunned him Victor grew up loved and privileged with a family that raised him with great aspirations for
