To what extent did the presidencies of Jefferson and Madison reduce the tensions of the 1790s Thomas Jefferson and James Madison reduced the tensions of the 1790s by including many of their opponents policies in their presidencies The 1790s were full of political battles between the Federalists and the anti-Federalists also known as Republicans While the Federalists urged for a strong federal government the anti-Federalists wanted the state governments to attain more power In 1800 Jefferson stepped into office as the third president of the United States which resolved the dispute between the Federalists and anti-Federalists and supposedly caused the Federalists to die out However Madison who served his presidency from 1808 to 1812 incorporated many of Jeffersons Federalist policies On one hand the Federalist views did not vanish after Jeffersons presidency because Madison adopted some of them during his presidency on the other hand Madison supported some policies of the Republicans The independent common farmer symbolized the Jeffersonian simplicity Jefferson supported the Agrarian economic ideal which stated that agriculture is superior to the development of industry because it ensured freedom and stability in the nationHe saw Hamiltons economic plans as corrupt and harmful to the hardworking farmers because industry would lead to greed and unhealthy competition which could simply be avoided by farming Hence Jefferson diminished the size and power of the federal government significantlyJefferson strongly opposed Hamiltons proposal for a national bank and to tax the states to pay off debts which were rising due to an unneeded standing army Jeffersons views of having a weaker federal government were tested when the United States was offered the Louisiana Territory which was to theThe Louisiana Territory to thewest of the Mississippi RiverPreviously under the possession of the French who then gave it to the Spanish in 1763 after the French Indian War and France regained it in 1801French leader Napoleon Bonaparte urgently needed cash and knew he would lose the territory to the United
