OF MICE AND MEN - SOCIAL COMMENTARY In Of Mice And Men the author John Steinbeck adds many characters and events which make the novella a social commentary How the author describes Crooks Curleys wife and the relationship between Lennie and George display the views and social concerns of that era When the reader is introduced to Crooks heshe is constantly reminded through dialogue that he is black Not by other characters but rather by himself Almost every time he speaks he makes a comment about his being black and thats why hes segregated from the rest of the ranchers This incessant reminder informs the reader how society viewed black people at that time Curleys wife as she is given no other name is seen by the rest of the ranch as Curleys property not a person But as she talks to Lennie the reader sees that she is a person who has a history hopes and dreams and an opinion of how she is being treated She like many women of the time was expected to stay in the house cook clean and be seen by no one but her husband Through Curleys wife the reader gets a look at how women were treated during that era Lennie and George have a very close relationship or friendship however through their first encounter with the boss who cannot understand two me traveling together the reader sees that at the time it was not socially normal to have a traveling companion The thought of that era was every man for himself which is displayed through the bosss disbelief of their friendship All of these characters events and more make Of Mice And Men a social commentary
