A Patients Story is an autobiographical article by Kenneth Schwartz written shortly before the authors death from lung cancer He describes his experience finding out about the cancer doing everything that he could to fight against it and along the way learning a valuable lesson about what real care is truly all about In fact this lesson hit home with him so significantly that he was able to open the Kenneth B Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare before he died He wanted to make sure that everyone who went through the painful trials and tribulations that he experienced as a cancer patient was provided the same level of top quality care and compassion that he received When Schwartz was first diagnosed with lung cancer at the age of 40 in 1994 he was completely shocked He was a very health-conscious healthcare lawyer who did not smoke and was very fit It took him a while to absorb and accept the news but once he did he put himself on a mission to find a treatment or a cure that would wipe it out He had always lived his life as a very determined and goal-oriented person and his goal was to fight this battle and win Even though he did not technically win the battle by surviving the disease he still became a champion looking out for the needs of other patients The way that nurses treated him meant everything to him and made the last months of his life bearable He especially appreciated it when the nurses went outside the rule book and expressed themselves to him as a person and not a patient He wrote I cannot emphasize enough how meaningful it was to me when caregivers revealed something about themselves that made a personal connection to my plight It made me feel much less lonely One of his goals in opening the Kenneth
