The question behind this lab was what is the reaction when you mix water oil food coloring and Alka-Seltzer After going over the question I made a hypothesis which was if we mix water oil food coloring and Alka-Seltzer then the mixture within the test tube will send bubbles of CO2 making a lava lamp like reaction with colored bubbles My hypothesis was correct The reason my hypothesis was correct is showed in my observations The first observation I made was after we did Trial 1 After I dropped the first piece of Alka-Seltzer the mixture started to fizz as this had happened the level of the mixture rose The carbon dioxide and water bubbles rose to the top After the bubbles reached the top the bubbles sunk back down because the carbon dioxide was released making the bubbles mostly oxygen 1 I believe that the lab had some experimental errors because when Will and I were dividing the Alka-Seltzer tablet into four not all pieces had the same mass Another experimental error that may have had an effect on the reaction is the soap that was in the test tube from when the class before us did the experimentThis lab worked because of the Archimedes Principle which states that the buoyant force is equal to the weight of the water displaced Meaning if the weight of the water displaced is less than the weight of the object the object will sink Otherwise the object will float This happens in the lab we did because the weight of carbon dioxide is less than the density of the oxygen making the bubbles rise and when the bubbles reach the top of the test tube the carbon dioxide is released making the oxygen bubbles sink Oxygen is a hydrophilic and the oil is a hydrophobic the oxygen goes to the water because it is pushed by the oil This brings me to my next point
