I came to the United States with dreams of further study Initially it wasnt easy to settle down as I was away from my family for the very first time I was feeling home sick so I invited my mother to visit me I was extremely happy to see my mother however my happiness turned to grief when my mother suffered a transient ischemic attack in the very first week of her visit The biggest problem that I had to face at that time was a lack of funds My mother had no medical insurance and we were expected to pay all the bills My mothers condition was quite critical and the doctor recommended tests such as a CAT scan and MRI which were very expensive I contacted various insurance companies about medical coverage but to my great disappointment there was no insurance plan that would provide medical coverage for visitors Likewise I contacted several banks to try to obtain a loan but due to my short credit history none was willing In order to continue with the treatment the hospital wanted me to sign a contract which would put the responsibility for payment on me Suddenly my mothers care and treatment was mine to decide on Being her only caretaker I was responsible for all decisions regarding her care The situation caused me to have to grow up as I had never experienced anything quite that traumatic I decided to contact the hospital management and inform them of my financial situation They gave me the option of paying the bill of 30000 in installments which wasnt such a big relief as I had to find the money to pay the installments I spoke with a doctor friend of mine who informed me that it was the legal responsibility of a hospital to treat a patient and provide first aid The hospital could either bill my mother who had the status of a visitor here
