With the advancement in technology you can find almost anything on the internet Most books in addition to audio of books can be found on-line Almost all newspapers journals and magazines are reverting to online editorials rather than printing the articles Having this type of information at most students disposal its almost impossible to get children to go to a libraryOften times teachers assign reading assignments that are hard for the students to grasp the authors message Its hard for them to write a compelling argument about the assignment when they have no sense of what they have read Allowing students to have some input as to what text they are going to read increases their chances of reading the assignment Most students are going to select a text that either interests them or they have some knowledge about Rather that knowledge may be from a recent movie they saw or the hottest music artist writing the book it gives them an edge in the assignment Many schools across the country has reverted to the Sustained Silent Reading program This is a program that allows students to choose their own reading material to read during the designated class time The theory behind sustained silent reading is that if students read more and enjoy it more they will become better readers As they read each day they encounter new words usage sentence structures and ideas Each day adds to their total experience and makes the next day better Stephen Krashen of the University of Southern California in his excellent book The Power of Reading 1993 p x describes free voluntary reading as reading because you want to Turning students into highly literate people is exactly what silent reading programs are designed to do Free Voluntary Reading is one of the most powerful tools we have in language education Krashen says
